What’s the Best Part of Game Day?

For Kelsi, stepping onto the field at halftime is nothing short of magical. "Hearing the whistle from the drum majors is both nerve-wracking and exhilarating," she says. Dancing to the show tunes in the stands also brings an unmatched energy that makes the day even more special.


Memorable Game Day Moment

Kelsi recalls her sophomore year, performing a flawless Michael Jackson halftime show. "We had been struggling with one of the exchanges during practice, so when we nailed the performance with no drops, we were ecstatic!"

What Makes College Twirling Special

“Twirling at Kent State has taught me lifelong skills and given me some of my strongest friendships.” Beyond the friendships, Kelsi cherishes how twirling connects her to the game day experience and the energy of the crowd.


Game Day Traditions & Preparation

The Touch of Gold Twirlers have a quirky pre-performance tradition: wiping their hands on their coach’s pants for good luck! Kelsi also has her own ritual of catching all her big tricks five times before pregame to ensure she’s ready to shine.

Practice Makes Perfect

The Golden Flashes Marching Band practices three times a week for two hours each session, giving Kelsi and her team plenty of preparation time. The twirlers also hold their own sectionals and practice individually to perfect their routines.



Go-To Game Day Snack

Hotdogs and hamburgers are the usual fare on game day, keeping the team fueled and ready to perform.


Words of Wisdom for Aspiring College Twirlers

“Keep working hard and practice every chance you get,” Kelsi advises. College twirling presents new challenges, especially as you adapt to new teammates and twirling styles. But the reward? "There’s nothing like the thrill of stepping onto a college field—it’s worth every moment of hard work!"
