Welcome to this week’s College Twirler Takeover, where we dive into the world of collegiate baton twirling through the eyes of Sophia Lutz, the talented feature twirler at Clemson University!
Meet Sophia
College/University: Clemson University
Year in School: Sophomore
Hometown: Columbia, Pennsylvania
Years of Twirling Experience: 18
Sophia has been captivating audiences since she started twirling at age 4. Her impressive competitive career includes five national titles with Drum Majorettes of America, including the prestigious Majorette Queen of America. Now in her second year at Clemson, she brings her passion and talent to the collegiate stage as the feature twirler.
Game Day Favorites and Traditions
For Sophia, gameday at Clemson is magical. Her day begins with a performance at the amphitheater, where she connects with fans, especially aspiring young twirlers. "I love getting to talk to young twirlers and Clemson fans after our amphitheater concert," she says. "It’s inspiring to be part of their experience and to share the joy of twirling."
The excitement carries over into pregame, which Sophia describes as electrifying. "The energy in the stadium never fails to give me butterflies," she says. One of her most cherished memories is running onto the field during her first-ever pregame performance—a moment that still feels surreal.
Before heading out, Sophia joins Clemson’s three drum majors for a pregame handshake ritual and shares a prayer with her coach, calming her nerves and focusing her energy.
The Joys of Collegiate Twirling
For Sophia, twirling at Clemson is about more than performing. It’s about inspiring others and building connections with her community. "My goal as a feature twirler is to inspire and entertain," she shares. "Talking to young girls or taking photos with them makes me feel like I’m living up to that goal."
She also appreciates the life lessons and friendships that come with the experience. "Every moment, from preseason camp to gameday, feels like a dream come true."
Preparation and Performance
Sophia credits her success to a combination of physical and mental preparation throughout the week. "Gameday is much less stressful than competitions," she notes. "I remind myself that I’m living out my biggest dream and focus on performing in the moment."
Of course, no gameday is complete without her essentials: a venti cold brew from Starbucks and peanut butter pretzels—her go-to snacks for a busy day of performing.
Advice for Aspiring College Twirlers
Sophia’s advice to future college twirlers is simple yet profound: "You end up exactly where you’re supposed to be. Once you get there, take it all in—every practice, every game. You deserve it."
Sophia Lutz’s journey as Clemson’s feature twirler is a testament to hard work, passion, and embracing the moments that make collegiate twirling so special. We can’t wait to see where her twirling career takes her next.
